Morocco has felt like such a special place to be in the last few months. Despite several major National restrictions, life has felt relatively… Normal?

Over the last few months Local Surf Maroc has been receiving numerous DM’s and PM’s about the circumstances and restrictions in Taghazout Bay, Morocco. Frequently asked questions have included: Is there anything to do? What’s open? Can we go surfing?

We thought we’d round up answering all the questions about the Coronavirus, State of Emergency, and general expectations if you find yourself in a position to travel to Morocco.

The idea of surfing in the middle of the winter months seems a little ludacris, especially when you have to add hoods, boots, and gloves to your equipment list. Surfing is meant to be a hot weather activity, right?

Earlier this month, the news from several airlines was that flights for business and leisure would be possible from Sept 10 and onwards, but then the Moroccan Government announced that the State of Emergency would be extended until October 10.

Nothing destroys these plans and creates a taste of disappointment more than bad weather or uncooperative waves.

Not to worry! Even if surfing is not an option for a day or two, there are still plenty of things to do in and around Agadir for you to leave Morocco with amazing memories.

What about food? If it’s really hot out, your appetite may be stifled. If you’re going for a surf, any heavy food might leave you feeling nauseous once you’re on the surfboard (all that pressure on your stomach!).

With all the optimism in the world, everyone in Morocco was hoping for the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions to be eased last week. As surf camp owners, we had our fingers crossed that the state of emergency would be lifted for international travel. But on June 9, the Moroccan government announced that the State of Emergency would be extended to July 10.

Last time we posted, Local Surf Maroc was in limbo. Today, we still remain in lockdown. Over the last few months we have taken the time to reflect on, not only our intentions to own a surf camp, but what we would like it to look like and how it makes guests feel. The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the tourism industry but and at Local Surf Maroc we have had to make some difficult decisions. They are decisions that we feel will allow the surf camp to move forwards in the coming months and years.

COVID-19 has changed the world, in obvious and not so obvious ways. As lockdowns and travel restrictions continue around the world, Morocco included, we continue to see the world change around us in unexpected ways.
