Taghazout has historically and notably been known as a surfing destination since the 1960’s, however, there are over 50 surf spots in and around Taghazout Bay, which is along Morocco's west coast.
Morocco boasts numerous kind of breaks: beach, point, and reef breaks, giving all the surfing spots theirs own unique features and challenges. Some spots are best for beginners, while others only the most experienced and pro surfers should attempt.
I've been surfing along this part of the coast since I was 9 years old, so I've got a few favourites I'd like to tell you about.
#1 - Killer Point
Distance from Tamraght: 15 min drive
Distinguishing Features: Killer Point is difficult to get to, regardless of level, because of the long paddle to get to where the waves break and to get yourself situated properly. There are 3 peaks and plenty of open, hollow waves.
Best Time To Surf: Low to mid tide as high tide leaves too much backwash and makes a long paddle even longer!
Why It's My Fav: Killer Point is not as crowded as other spots because of the long paddle, but once you catch a wave it's a massive reward with the sections of speed and barrels.
#2 - Boilers
Distance from Tamraght: 35 min drive
Distinguishing Features: Boilers has a shallow reef and a lot of sea urchins. The most distinguishing feature of the surf spot is the actual boiler that was dumped from a ship decades ago. The entry and exit are difficult and requires a lot of patience.
Best Time To Surf: All tides, but best is mid to low tide.
Why It's My Fav: While it's a challenging spot, and I would recommend only advanced or experienced surfers go here. The surf spot has a lot of sections, but if you catch a nice section the wave is open and allows you to execute some great manuevers.
#3 - Anza
Distance from Tamraght: 10 min drive
Distinguishing Features: There is a Reef break and split break, which means the wave splits into left and right handed waves, giving you more surfing options.
Best Time To Surf: All tides, so long as the wind direction is favourable.
Why It's My Fav: Because I surf goofy, it's one of the few places I can surf facing the wave as most spots in the Taghazout and Tamraght area are right handed waves.
This spot is also good for all levels of surfers so you can go as a group and all surf your level of wave.
#4 - Imsouane
Distance from Tamraght: 90 min drive
Distinguishing Features: Imsouane is a fishing village that overlooks the beach. As Imsouane has a harbour, it has some of the longest waves that run along the bay.
Best Time To Surf: Low tide
Why It's My Fav: Even though I'm not a long boarder, I'll long board in Imsouane. It's the best place to long board and catch some of the longest waves here.
#5 - Anchor Point
Distance from Tamraght: 15 min drive
Distinguishing Features: Anchor Point is one of the most famous point breaks in Morocco for intermediate to professional surfers, with its clean lines and consistency on all tides.
Best Time To Surf: Low to mid tide.
Why It's My Fav: Anchor Point is a point break that has one of the easiest access points. It is also one of the longest waves for a point break that Morocco has to offer, with speed and hollow sections.
