our story: Rachid

Rachid, Surf Instructor, Go pro surf guiding, surf adventure, surf holiday, surf trip to Crocros, Tamraght, Taghazout Bay, Morocco.

Rachid grew up with the ocean always within view. His earliest memory of being an ocean child was when his family would go to Killer Point to collect mussels to cook for dinner that same evening. With his father being a fisherman, Rachid was introduced to swimming among waves and local ocean knowledge: tides, weather, and moon phases.

Rachid’s introduction to surfing also happened while he was a child, seeing tourists camped around Taghazout Village with their caravans and surfboards. Not yet having a surfboard of his own, Rachid and his friends played along by learning how to body surf.

At 9, Rachid’s father finally bought him a proper surfboard. He had already learned to surf and pop up on body boards and other broken surfboards left behind by campers. But this new surfboard started a habit of being late for school or skipping class completely when the waves were good.

Rachid began working in surf shops and then later for various surf camps and surf schools in the Taghazout Bay area. Not only did he learn how to teach surfing, but he learned about the hospitality and surfing industry, refining his teaching and hosting skills.

After 10 years, wanting to bring his own flavour of surf coaching and surf experience to the industry, Rachid started up his own surf camp and school in Tamraght, Taghazout Bay, near his hometown.

our story: Christiana

Christiana in red at the Taekwondo Great British Nationals 2016, sparring champion winning gold

Despite growing up landlocked in Canada, Christiana grew up to be a water baby, with her earliest memories involving water and splashing around in one swimming pool after another. It didn’t take long for her to become a competent swimmer as a child and become more comfortable in the water than on land. Swim clubs didn’t hold Christiana’s interest, but her and her family spent many summers stay-cationing in her Canadian hometown and swimming in the outdoors pools, clocking up the miles in front crawl.

The first time Christiana ever tried surfing was on a holiday in Hawaii in 2011, not satisfied just sitting on a sandy beach. Instead of being able to pursue surfing, Christiana moved to the UK 2012, where her nursing career, and involvement in Taekwondo kept her landlocked.

It wasn’t until 2017, however, after a trip to Fuerteventura, Spain, that reignited her desire to learn how to surf and be next to the ocean. After living in Cornwall, England for a few years she now lives in Taghazout Bay, Morocco full time.

our story: How they met

The Local Surf Maroc team adventuring the Tamri sand dunes, Morocco

Christiana and Rachid met in 2017 while she was on holiday in Imi Ouaddar, Morocco. The country was never on her Top 10 places to visit but it was the sunshine and surfing that lured her to go. While Christiana was interested in surfing she was not interested in a surfer boy, and Rachid was convinced that he could convince Christiana to fall in love with Morocco.

After half a year of patience, Rachid finally managed to convince her. A year later, Christiana made the switch to tourism and hospitality to run the surf camp and surf school. Local Surf Maroc makes its mark by having their guests feel at home and relaxed in their accommodation and provide top quality, unforgettable surf experiences. Most guests felt like they came to Morocco not knowing anyone, and left feeling like they had spent the week surfing with friends.

What started as a one man show has grown into a family owned and operated, professional surf school and surf camp in Taghazout Bay, Morocco.
