About Local Surf Maroc

Coaching-First Surf School & Surf Camp in Taghazout, Morocco

Our Story:

From local roots to Professional Surf Coaching

Local Surf Maroc was founded by Rachid Makoua, a surfer and coach born and raised in Taghazout, in the heart of Morocco’s surf culture.

Being the son of a fisherman, Rachid’s life has always been shaped by the ocean. The sea was not just scenery — it was routine, responsibility, and respect. From an early age, he understood tides, currents, and the changing moods of the Atlantic.

Growing up in Taghazout, Morocco, Rachid began riding waves at local breaks like Anchor Point, Hash Point, and Panoramas — spots that would later become world-renowned. What started as curiosity quickly became discipline. Days were structured around swell direction, wind conditions, and the rhythm of the coastline.

For Rachid, surfing was never just recreation. It was a craft learned over time — shaped by repetition, observation, and deep local knowledge.

He started out working in local surf shops and teaching lessons, gaining firsthand experience in every part of the surf world. Over time, he became a full-time instructor for some of Taghazout’s original surf camps — learning what worked, what didn’t, and what surfers really needed to progress.

Rachid saw a gap between casual surf holidays and true surf education — and set out to bridge it.

He founded Local Surf Maroc to offer something different: professional, structured coaching delivered with the warmth, authenticity, and pride of Moroccan hospitality.

What began as a small, homegrown project has grown into a trusted coaching-first surf school and surf amp known for its personalized approach, educational mindset, and commitment to developing both visiting surfers and local talent.

Here, every wave is a step forward — a chance to learn, connect, and grow.

Part of the Moroccan Coastline

Taghazout Bay refers to the stretch of coastline that includes both Taghazout and Tamraght — two neighboring surf villages connected by the same breaks, swells, and Atlantic rhythm.

Our base is in Tamraght, a village just 5km south of Taghazout. From here, we have direct access to the entire coastline, allowing us to choose the best surf spot each day based on conditions and your level.

Rather than being tied to one beach, we move along the bay to find the right waves for progression. Some days that might mean a mellow sand-bottom break. Other days, a clean point or reef suited to more advanced surfers.

This flexibility is central to how we coach.

By working across the Taghazout Bay coastline, we can:

  • Match waves to ability

  • Adapt to swell and wind changes

  • Keep sessions safe and appropriate

  • Support steady, structured improvement

Being based in Tamraght doesn’t limit us — it gives us access to the full range of waves that make this region one of Morocco’s most consistent surf destinations.

What Makes Local Surf Maroc Different?

Local Surf Maroc is both a surf school and a surf camp — but we don’t treat them as separate things.

The camp creates the environment. The school creates the progression.

You stay with us, eat with us, surf with us — but every session in the water has a purpose. We don’t just paddle out and hope for good waves. We coach, correct, and guide.

Whether you’re learning your first pop-up or refining your bottom turn, every lesson is built around improvement.

We keep groups small so we can truly see you surf. We give feedback because that’s how you grow. We choose spots carefully so the conditions match your level.

Some surf camps focus on atmosphere. Some surf schools focus only on technique.

We believe you need both.

That’s why we’ve built a small-group surf camp around the structure of a professional surf school — so you leave not just with great memories, but with stronger skills and a deeper understanding of the ocean.

Our philosophy is simple:

Progress in surfing isn’t random. It’s structured.

Our Vision For Surf Education in Morocco

We believe Morocco can be known not only for its waves — but for the way surfing is taught.

Our vision is to raise the standard of surf education in the Taghazout region and beyond by building a coaching-first surf school and surf camp rooted in structure, local knowledge, and genuine progression.

We’re working toward a future where:

  • Surf coaching in Morocco is defined by clarity and measurable improvement

  • Local Moroccan instructors are developed, respected, and empowered

  • Visiting surfers leave with real skills — not just good photos

  • Every session in the water builds confidence, understanding, and long-term growth

For us, surf travel should be more than a holiday: It should be an education.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to help surfers make real progress.

At Local Surf Maroc, we operate as both a surf school and a small-group surf camp in the Taghazout region. That means you don’t just stay with us — you learn with intention.

We believe surf progression comes from clarity, repetition, and honest feedback. So every session is structured, every surf spot is chosen carefully, and every surfer is coached based on their level, not the crowd.

Through small groups, professional instruction, video analysis, and deep local knowledge of the Taghazout and Tamraght coastline, we guide surfers step by step — from first pop-up to a confident bottom turn.

When you leave, you should leave with:

✔️ Stronger technique
✔️ Better wave awareness
✔️ More confidence in changing conditions
✔️ And a deeper understanding of the ocean

Personalized. Professional. Proudly Moroccan.

Always about progress.

Rooted in the Region

Local Surf Maroc is not just located in Taghazout and Tamraght — we are part of this coastline.

Our coaches grew up here. We learned to surf the waves here. We know how the wind shifts in the afternoon and how a swell wraps differently in winter.

We are committed to strengthening the surf community that shaped us by:

  • Supporting and developing local Moroccan surf instructors

  • Creating long-term opportunities within the region

  • Teaching respect for the ocean and its changing conditions

  • Offering hospitality that reflects who we are — honest, welcoming, and proud

Our surf school brings structure to the water. Our surf camp brings people together around it.

Together, they reflect the rhythm of this place — where learning, community, and the ocean are inseparable.

FAQ

Is Local Surf MAroc a surf camp or a surf school?

1

We are both.

At our core, we are a professional surf school — structured, progression-focused, and coaching-led. That structure is delivered through a small-group surf camp experience where you stay, surf, and learn with us.

For surfers who prefer flexibility, we also offer drop-in lessons and single coaching sessions, all guided by the same structured approach.

Whether you join for a full week or a single session, the focus remains the same: real progression.

Where are you located?

2

Our base is in Tamraght within Taghazout Bay, and we coach across the full Taghazout coastline depending on conditions and level.

Who are your surf instructors?

3

Our instructors are experienced Moroccan surfers who grew up on this coastline and teach through structured, progression-focused coaching.

Each coach is ISA certified or progressing through the ISA pathway — reinforcing our commitment to professional surf education in Morocco.

Do you focus only on progression or do you also provide surf holidays?

4

We believe a surf holiday should have structure and meaning.

At Local Surf Maroc, we take the atmosphere of a surf camp and combine it with the clarity of a professional surf school. That means you still enjoy the experience — the ocean, the community, the coastline — but every session has purpose.

We don’t remove the holiday feeling.
We give it direction.
