Lockdown Limbo

Ramadan can be a time of reflection, an appreciation of what we have instead of dwelling on what we don’t have. And we have much to be thankful for: our respective families have stayed healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic; our friends near and far have also remained healthy, and we have been able to stay connected with our community. Because of this we are able to communicate with you from a place of peace and gratitude.

COVID-19 has changed the world, in obvious and not so obvious ways. As lockdowns and travel restrictions continue around the world, Morocco included, we continue to see the world change around us in unexpected ways.

The tourism and hospitality industry has been one of the hardest hit sectors globally. Even though travel is resuming in some countries, how we travel has changed and will likely continue to change in the coming months. At Local Surf Maroc, we have been keeping our ears close to the ground for any updates in our country wide lockdown, to see if flight routes to Agadir will resume, and connecting with others in our surfing community to share updates and information.

We are optimistic that travel and tourism will resume to Taghazout Bay soon, so we are open to accepting future bookings. But we find ourselves in limbo: as long as Morocco keeps its borders closed, we will keep our doors closed. Our InstaGram and Facebook page we have been posting from our archives in the hopes of staying connected and inspiring our friends, old and those yet to walk through our doors.

We have been trying to make the most of our downtime, not only keeping in touch with family and friends, but also giving a lot of thought to the future. Particular thought is going to what changes we will have to make to our surf camp to ensure all guests we welcome will be safe and able to remain healthy during their stay.

We hope that from June 10 the Moroccan government begins to ease restrictions, but we won’t wait that long before we begin to implement the changes we feel are necessary to make. We will be sure to keep everyone updated as the changes are made through all our channels.

In the meantime, we invite you to get lost in our memories before the global pandemic began. Stay healthy, stay safe, and we will see you soon.
