5 Activities When the Waves are Flat in Taghazout Bay

Hi, my name is Rachid.

If you don't know me yet, you will quickly: I'm the kind of guy that takes every day as it comes. In my free time I don't make plans so nothing ever disappoints me.

But I understand that when you have booked a surf holiday with Local Surf Maroc, you've made a plan. Not just a plan about when you're travelling, but planned an experience: A plan to spend time in the sunshine, a plan to spend time on the beach, and a plan to surf

Nothing is more devastating than when bad weather rolls in or the waves don’t cooperate.

Not to worry.

Even if surfing is not an option for a day or two, there are still plenty of things to do in and around Taghazout Bay for you to leave Morocco with amazing memories. If you’ve booked on our Intermediate Surf Mentoring Experience, we have even included activities so that your surfing doesn’t take a step backwards.

  1. Swim

Swimming is not the same as surfing, of course, but we think it’s the next best thing. Having a little splash around in the water and chilling at the beach is as good for your body and mind as a little surf session. Recovery is just as important as activity!

2. Walk or Hike

If you’re too restless to chill at the beach and want to burn energy, a walk or hike is your best choice. There are a number of walking and hiking options around Taghazout Bay depending how far you want to go or how difficult you’d like to make it for yourself.

A walk along the boardwalk from Tamraght to Taghazout takes about 45 minutes will let you take in views of the ocean and beach that you might miss if you only surf. Though the Anti-Atlas Mountains are further inland the coast is still considerably hilly, creating some walking and hiking paths that are suitable for the non-walker to the experienced hiker. Guided hikes are also available for those up for an inland adventure for a day!

3. Surf Specific Training Session

When we say “gym”, we don’t really mean “gym”.

What we really mean is a unique rooftop terrace training centre.

If you’ve signed up to our Intermediate Surf Mentoring Experience, a session with coach Yozi is included where he will take you through sport specific mobility drills and functional training to improve your surfing.

Working on another aspect of your fitness? Yozi takes a progressive and individualized approach for that too.

Don’t let the size of the gym fool you! Yozi utilizes every corner of the space giving you the most unique fitness experience.

4. Surf Skate Lessons

As an alternative to Surf Specific Training on our Intermediate Surf Mentoring Experience, we offer a Surf Skate session.

It’s gaining popularity among landlocked surfers, and for good reason!

Surf Skate is a little different than longboard skateboarding or skateboards used at a skate park in that the trucks are a little looser to recreate that slippery feeling of being in the water. This allows a skateboarder to practice lay backs and cut backs on concrete waves until they can get back out to the ocean again.

Or in our case: until the waves return.

5. Hammam & Spa

A Hammam or massage is perfect if the weather has turned cold, or you’ve spent all week surfing and feeling a little sore.

And what’s a holiday without a treat?

Typical European massages are available to be booked if you're looking to relax and release some tension in your muscles.

A Hamman involves a full body scrub and steam bath, leaving you feeling very clean, refreshed and warm from the inside out. Included in all our Surf Experiences is a chance to experience an authentic Moroccan Hammam: a full body scrub and steam bath.
