Local Surf Maroc's Guide to Taghazout's Surf Seasons
When to Visit Based on Your Surf Level and Goals
Taghazout has earned its reputation as one of Europe's favourite surf destinations, attracting everyone from first-time surfers to experienced travellers chasing long point breaks. But one question comes up time and time again:
"When is the best time to surf in Taghazout?"
The answer depends less on the calendar and more on your surfing ability and what you're hoping to achieve.
At Local Surf Maroc, we don't believe there's one "perfect" season. Every time of year offers something different, and understanding those seasonal changes will help you choose the best time for your next surf trip.
Understanding Taghazout's Surf Seasons
Unlike many surf destinations that experience dramatic seasonal changes, Taghazout offers surfable waves throughout the year.
What changes isn't whether there are waves—it's the size, consistency, variety and the type of surfers those conditions suit best.
Broadly speaking, the year can be divided into four surf seasons:
Summer (June-August)
Early Autumn (September-October)
Winter (November-February)
Spring (March-May)
Summer (June-August)
Best for Beginners and Improvers
Summer often surprises people.
Many assume smaller waves mean "worse" surfing, but for beginners, they're often exactly what you want.
Smaller swells create an ideal environment for learning:
building confidence
practising pop-ups
improving paddling
learning ocean awareness
repeating skills consistently
The water is warm, the weather is sunny, and there's usually less pressure to surf waves beyond your ability.
For surfers beginning to catch green waves, summer can also be an excellent time to refine fundamentals before the Atlantic starts producing larger swells later in the year.
Typical conditions
Smaller Atlantic swells
Long periods of sunshine
Warm water
Consistent beginner-friendly sessions
Great learning environment
Choose if you:
Are learning to surf for the first time.
Want smaller, more forgiving waves.
Prefer warm weather and consistent beginner-friendly conditions.
Want to build confidence through repetition.
Early Autumn (September-October)
The Transition Season
As summer fades, Atlantic activity gradually increases.
This doesn't mean every day suddenly becomes big or challenging. Instead, there are more opportunities across a wider range of conditions and surf spots.
Some days remain ideal for beginners. Others begin producing cleaner green waves that are perfect for progressing surfers.
This makes early autumn one of our favourite times of year for surfers who already have the basics and are ready to develop greater independence.
It's also when flexibility becomes increasingly important. Choosing the right surf spot each day matters more than ever.
Choose if you:
Are comfortable catching green waves.
Want a wider variety of conditions.
Are ready to develop greater independence in the water.
Enjoy quieter line-ups outside the peak summer months.
Winter (November-February)
Morocco's Most Consistent Surf Season
Winter is what has made Taghazout famous.
Powerful Atlantic storms generate consistent swell, bringing many of the region's iconic point breaks to life.
For intermediate and advanced surfers, this is an incredible time to visit.
For beginners, winter can still be an excellent season—but only with careful surf spot selection and coaching. While exposed reefs and points may be working overhead, sheltered beaches often continue offering manageable conditions for learning.
One of the biggest misconceptions about winter is that every surfer should head to the biggest waves. In reality, good coaching is about matching the surfer to the conditions, not the other way around.
Typical conditions
Frequent Atlantic swells
More powerful waves
Greater variety of surf spots
Cooler water
More advanced opportunities
Choose if you:
Want Morocco's most consistent swell.
Are an intermediate surfer looking for more powerful waves.
Are a beginner travelling with experienced coaches who can select suitable beaches each day.
Want the greatest variety of working surf spots.
Spring (March-May)
Variety and Progression
Spring often combines many of the strengths of both winter and summer.
Consistent swell continues arriving from the Atlantic, but conditions gradually become smaller and more manageable.
For many surfers, it's an ideal progression season.
Improvers gain more opportunities to practise green waves without the consistency of winter's larger swells, while beginners continue finding suitable beaches on most days.
The weather also begins warming again, making spring a popular time for surf holidays.
Choose if you:
Want a balance between consistency and manageable conditions.
Are progressing beyond the beginner stage.
Enjoy warm weather without the peak-season crowds.
Want a mix of mellow and more challenging sessions.
Why the Best Season Isn't Always the Biggest
One of the biggest misconceptions in surfing is that larger waves automatically lead to faster progression.
In reality, the opposite is often true.
Most surfers improve fastest when they're challenged just beyond their comfort zone—not overwhelmed by conditions they're not yet ready for.
That's why our experienced surf coaches spend so much time choosing the right beach each day.
Progress comes from surfing the right waves, not the biggest ones.
How Local Surf Maroc Approaches Every Season
Rather than building our coaching around a fixed surf spot, we build it around our guests.
Every day we assess:
swell direction
swell size
wind
tide
surfer ability
coaching objectives
We then choose the location that gives each group the best opportunity to learn, progress and enjoy the session.
Whether you're catching your first whitewater wave in July or refining your turns in January, our goal remains the same:
To help you leave Morocco a more confident, capable and independent surfer than when you arrived.
Every Great Surf Trip Starts with Knowing Your Level
Before choosing the best season, the best surf camp or even the best surfboard, it's worth understanding where you are in your surfing journey.
Our Surf Level Assessment helps identify your current ability and recommends the coaching programme designed to help you take the next step.
Whether you're learning your first pop-up, working towards consistent green waves or refining your technique, knowing your level is the first step towards making meaningful progress.
